BEAUTY KNOWS NO PAIN

Yesterday I gave a coworker a compliment on her shoes. They were a colorful and somewhat shiny pair of shoes that had a small opening in the front for her toes, very elegant looking. Afterwards she proceeded to tell me how much they hurt her feet and how she would kick them off under her desk when sitting. My curiosity increased and I just had to ask the question. "So why do you wear them if they hurt your feet?" I asked. "Are they too tight? Maybe you should get a bigger size."

"No they're my size" she said. "Feet just aren't made to be squished up all day in a pair of pointy shoes." I gave her a weird look of unapproval. "Oh Rom, do you know what it means to be a woman? Aah, I forgot who I was talking to; of course you don't. I'll tell you what my mom used to tell me and my sisters all the time. Beauty knows no pain. It's the curse we woman have to bare."

"What the hell does that mean? Beauty knows no pain" I asked. Seems I had her complete attention because she then turned to me with her hands on hips and said, "It means, ROM, that we woman will do whatever we have to in order to look our best. If that means wearing fashionable shoes that hurt our feet than so be it! Sit in the beauty shop for an entire day, than so be it! Wear a tight ass girdle to suck in our fat while we can't breath than so be it!" She was now yelling at me, but so be it, I thought to myself. There was no way I was gonna speak up now. "WHATEVER! Do you understand that?"

"Excuse me, but why are you shouting?" Dumb question but I just had to know, again. "This woman is crazy" I whispered to myself as I started backing away from her. "I just can't believe you never heard of that phrase. Where the hell where you raised in a cave? You really are a tomboy. Did you not do any of this stuff when you were a kid? Makeup parties? Shoe shopping. Hell, even bra shopping. You did wear a bra when you were a teenager didn't you Rom?"

"Yes I wore a bra and I hated shopping for it so I had my mom do it."

"That's exactly my point. You hated it and do you know why you hated shopping for that bra Rom?"

"I don't know. Just hated it that's all. Took too much time trying to find one. Then when you finally found one, they didn't have my size so we had to start all over again."

"THAT'S IT!" she shouted. "Too much time. Rom, listen to me. It takes so much time for women to look the way we do. Hair, makeup, nails, clothes and tight shoes. The question IS why do we go through all this? To get a damn man that's why. A no good man that probably don't deserve us. You think I want to do all this shit? Hell no!"

I shrugged my shoulders. At least she had stopped yelling. Anyway we didn't have a mutual agreement that day. I had to walk away but I never forgot that phrase, "beauty knows no pain". This phrase sounded so pathetic to me. I still do not understand why anyone would put themselves through all that pain. Shouldn't the man like you for who you are? How long do you have to continue with the pain? I had all kinds of questions in my head. Oh well it won't be resolved today.
